VISUAL SIGNATURES

A project by Andrei Loginov and Caroline Siegers

CONCEPT

The artist Andrei Loginov captures the ephemere in three-dimen- sional images. Talking to me about the question how music could be condensed in a picure, we developed the idea to visualise the ballistics of the violin bow.

This makes it possible to receive VISUAL SIGNATURES from past times. For this purpose, the project uses a selection of musical ex- cerpts from four centuries.

The illuminated bow is photographed using lenticular photography, the sound is recorded. In the lenticular print, a three-dimensional effect is achieved. The recorded audio can be retrieved via QR-Code, or alternatively be installed together with the image, if the surroundings allow to do so.

This way, a musical fragment is transformed into a sculpture of light and sound.

The fragments have been taken from the following works:

Lisa Batiashvili:

Johannes Brahms, Violin Concerto
Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdi, Violin Concerto Karol Szymanowski, Violin Concerto No 1 Maurice Ravel, Violin Sonata
J. S, Bach Sonatas and Partitas
Gya Kancheli, Miniatures

Sara Ferrández:

Henri Vieuxtemps, Capriccio op. 55 (two excerpts)
Johann Sebastian Bach, Suite No 1
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Sinfonia Concertante (II. Andante)
Benjamin Britten, Suite No1 op. 72 III. Serenata

A SENSE OF TIME

Lab concert, feat. a song by Mikis Theodorakis, ADAF Greece online 2022

In our laboratory, Stock and I are using our newly built MIDI-controllers pendulum and crank for the first time. The piece is a vivisection of Mikis Theodorakis‘ song „Tin porta anigo to vradi“, from Ta Lyrica, lyrics by Tassos Livaditis.

Since the basic idea of cranking a MIDI-Sequence is derived from the functionality of a music box, the original music box needs its place in the lab as well. And since the „triplet“, an instrument initially used in a theatre show in 2015, is still working, this punchcard dj instrument appears likewise.

Thank you Philipp for your lovely camera work.
